Certain Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Are Tax Deductible

The phrase “cosmetic surgery” tends to evoke thoughts of shallow people who want to see movie star perfection when they look in the mirror. However, cosmetic surgery means more than just eye lifts, nose jobs, and tummy tucks. In reality, cosmetic surgery is simply an umbrella term used to describe any procedures intended to improve a patient’s physical appearance while not preventing or treating disease. Additionally, cosmetic surgery, as defined, does not meaningfully improve the body’s proper functions.

Typically, cosmetic surgery does not count as a deductible medical expense. However, there are exceptions to this. Patients who are seeking cosmetic surgery for the following reasons may be able to deduct the cost of the procedures from their returns at tax time:

  • To improve appearance that has been marred as a result of a disfiguring disease
  • To correct an abnormality that was present in the patient at birth
  • To reconstruct body parts that have been damaged as a result of an accident or other physical trauma

Surgery that has been performed to correct issues rooted in one of the circumstances listed above may be tax deductible. The team at Taxation Solutions, Inc. has four decades of experience with helping taxpayers determine which procedures may be tax deductible. Reach out to us today if you or a dependent has a cosmetic surgery date in the future, or if work has recently been done. We will listen to your circumstances, determine your eligibility for deductions, and advise you on how to proceed.
